Abeer Hasan is a Legal Officer / Appeals Counsel at the United Nations with the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT). Ms. Hasan currently provides direct case assistance to national war crimes prosecutors and prepares cases for transfer to war crimes offices in the former Yugoslavia. Ms. Hasan has worked on the appeals of the former President Radovan Karadzic and General Ratko Mladic, former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army. Prior to that, Ms. Hasan was a Trial Attorney with the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and worked on the investigation and prosecution of Generals Ratko Mladic and Zdravko Tolimir, each convicted of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, arising from the war in the former Yugoslavia. Her work has focused on Srebrenica related crimes. Ms. Hasan served as a member of the start-up team for the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism for Syria. Before joining the ICTY, Ms. Hasan worked for the Defence at the International Criminal Court and practiced civil litigation in Canada.

Howard and Jeanne Johnston, after working for the State Department in Europe, retired to Wichita and founded the Global Learning Center in 1988. The Howard & Jeanne Johnston Award for Global Community Citizenship was established in 2000 to honor their lives of international service and global citizenship. The 2019 recipient of this award will be the Peace and Social Justice Center of South Central Kansas and those who have sustained it. Founded in 1992, the Peace & Social Justice Center of South-Central Kansas is a nonpartisan, non-religious not-for-profit organization providing support for those in Kansas seeking peace locally, nationally and internationally.
