Conscientious Objectors requires action, not just feelings
Story submitted by Horace Santry on Sunday, December 5, 2004 - 12:00am
Every man between 16 and 26 years of age that applies for a Kansas ID or driver’s license has his information sent to the Selective Service System. Take from the Kansas DMV web site:” During the 2003 Legislative Session, Kansas lawmakers passed a bill, requiring that we (the DMV) send the Selective Service System information on all male applicants that are at least 16 years of age, but less than 26, applying for a driver‘s license or ID card. This law is effective July 1, 2003. “I’m only 16. I’m not required to register with the selective service system until my 18th birthday. Why are you sending my information to them”? We are required to do so by law ;however, the selective service system will not do anything with the information until you turn 18.” There is no draft today, but if young men and women wish to be considered Conscientious Objectors should the draft be reinstated now is the time to start the process. More pressing, if someone is now in the US Armed Forces and objects to being used to kill, what do they do? The Peace & Social Justice Center is continuing the work started this summer to have the procedures outlined. In addition, we will soon be bringing together those willing to serve as mentors for anyone seeking advice. If you would like to be added to the list of mentors, please call or email the Peace Center.

"An Act of Chalking" in Wichita
Story submitted by Horace Santry on Thursday, September 16, 2004 - 12:00am
At a time when people are blowing themselves up as an act of protest, events on a Sunday night this summer here in Wichita may seen trite. However, I cannot shake a feeling of warmth for the growth opportunity a small cadre of “young” protesters experienced that night. In a spontaneous un-sponsored act, they set out, using sidewalk chalk as their chosen weapon, to place social justice statements in downtown Wichita. And the police were called. With a promise of respecting privacy, I was given permission to lift some of comments from their on-line Blogs. I trust that my cut & paste editing does not change the message.
