Take part in the countrywide demonstrations to end the war in Iraq and say “No New War with Iran”

Oct. 27, 2007 is the 5th anniversary of the vote in the U.S. Senate, which gave George Bush authority to go to war in Iraq. The rationale for war was based on lies. A new nationwide survey finds a large and growing majority of Americans is dissatisfied with the position of the United States in the world. Most Americans believe that U.S. policies are increasing the threat of terrorist attack and decreasing goodwill toward the United States. Large majorities of Americans feel that the United States puts too much emphasis on military force and unilateral action.

Weary of War? Don't Collaborate

Weary of War? Don't Collaborate

By Kathy Kelly

t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Friday 18 April 2008

An April 14 Associated Press article by Anne Flaherty reported that US senators and representatives are finding common ground in asking that Iraqis begin picking up the tab for the cost of war. The lawmakers are troubled that Iraqis might experience windfall surpluses of revenue generated by rising oil prices, while Americans bear the burden of paying for the Iraq war. "In hearings last week," Flaherty writes, "Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut) asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates whether Baghdad should start paying some US combat costs, and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) raised the possibility that an anticipated Iraqi budget surplus this year could be used to help Afghanistan, whose $700 million in annual revenue represents a small fraction of Iraq's $46.8 billion budget."

Speech at Rally marking the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War
Page submitted by Laura Tillem on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 4:30pm
Let's talk about why getting out soon is better for the Iraqis.

Let's be clear: what the US as represented by the Bush administration does in Iraq has not been and will not be concerned with the interests of Iraqi people. They are interested in having a power base in Iraq with which to exercise power over the entire Middle East. Refusing to leave now that we have sowed destruction has nothing to do with stopping a civil war (in fact we are arming the Sunnis so when we do have to leave the civil war will be more deadly). Instead it is because they do not want to give up the idea of a pliant government there and they do not want to admit what the whole world knows: the US cannot just impose its will on another people.
