Working for Peace: Forgiveness & Action
With his incredible message of the power and necessity for forgiveness, during his October 2005 visit Michael Berg was relentless in reminding us all of the importance of working continually to end the war on Iraq. He encouraged us to seek our own inner peace as a critical part of working for peace in the world, to resolve inner anger and work from passion and the commitment to help bring peace to others.
A roundtable discussion of conference participants including M. Berg developed this list of actions we can take to end the war:
Hold vigils and demonstrations – they are measured by the numbers that turn out, bring as many people as possible (personal comment - I consider the moves now underway in Congress to define how and when we leave Iraq as a direct result of us holding public stop-the-war expressions in Wichita. Horace)
Increase the number of letters written to elected representatives and newspapers – (The Peace Center has a great brochure available for you to “spread the word”) Include statements opposing new funding bills that support any military operations in Iraq
Attend any town meetings held be Senators and Congress people
Move through any hesitancy you might have and display “Peace” & ”End The War” yard signs, shirts, buttons, bumper stickers
Ask your civic groups and congregations to make a public expression committing to peace.
Develop and help pass a city resolution calling for the end to the war
Encourage local school districts to stop the “militarization of youth” by removing JROTC programs and stop school supported recruiters access to students
Work to change the conditions that lead to war – poverty, oppression, racism, ect
Vote with your $$$$ - consider the politics of the people you keep in business with your purchases and investments. Are your retirement investments supporting military contractors?
Carefully consider strategic acts of nonviolent of civil disobedience
Work to move your city away from dependence on military contractors for financial security. Encourage local businesses you and your friends know to become independent of war related income.
Be active in local community groups working to end the war.—hint hint, our What’s Next Iraq Action Group meets the second and fourth Saturday each month at 10:30 a.m. at the Peace Center—hint hint
Find and refer to several sources for your news, www.wichitapeace.org has a list of suggestions
By bringing Michael to Wichita, the Peace Center enabled him to also take his message on the Salina, Manhattan and Kansas City. Shortly after leaving Kansas the Center for Peace and Justice Education of Villanova, PA presented Michael with the Adela Dwyer/St. Thomas of Villanova Peace Award for 2005 on Thursday, October 27, 2005.
A grant for the A. J. Muste Memorial Institute (ajmuste.org)
was instrumental in the ongoing work following the Conference |
