Thursday – Sept 13 – 7:30 p.m. “Can Mr. Smith Get To Washington Anymore?”
This documentary follows the 2004 Missouri Democratic primary to replace retiring 28-year veteran and former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt. It is told from inside the campaign of Jeff Smith, a 29-year old part-time political science instructor at Washington University.

The film questions how we elect our political leaders by showing that candidates with access to power and money have significant advantages over any contenders, regardless of their abilities. It shows what confronts fresh political faces with new ideas and passionate supporters when they go head-to-head against a political system that maintains power by manipulating a largely apathetic electorate. As a result, we tend to elect brand-name politicians despite their obvious shortcomings.

The film offers an unvarnished look at the inside of what national pundits called one of 2004's surprising campaigns. And the film asks if it is still possible in America for voters excited by a person's ideas and ability to get involved in the political process and elect a candidate who has not sold out, or bought into the existing political establishment.

Monday Oct 8 Interfaith Daylong Fast to End the War in Iraq
6:30 p.m.—Interfaith Prayers for Peace, 7:30 p.m.—Breaking the Fast

Why a Day of Fasting? Many of our faith traditions share a season of sacred self-assessment and self-transformation in the fall—including the month of Ramadan and the Night of Power (Islam); the High Holy Days and Sukkot (Judaism); and the Feast Day of Francis of Assisi and Worldwide Communion Sunday (Christianity).

Inter-Faith Ministries and People of Faith for Peace are joining a call from religious leaders and organizations across the nation for a day of fasting from dawn to dusk on Monday, October 8 (the day officially known as "Columbus Day") to call for an end to the Iraq War. On this day, people of faith in local communities across our nation will act as catalysts to transform the meaning of the day from one of conquest to community and from violence to reverence.

Everyone is invited to come together Monday evening:
6:30 p.m.—Interfaith Prayers for Peace
7:30 p.m.—Breaking the Fast (potluck dinner - please bring food to share with others)

The Panama Deception. 7-9 pm Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 South Holmes Ave. Library is located near the intersection of Hwy 44 and Big Bend behind the QT gas station (Holmes Ave.) :Latin American Forum: In 1989, Panama was invaded by 26,000 U.S. troops. They were searching for one man, Manuel Noriega. Stealth fighters roared overhead, media reports were suppressed, and the civilian body count may have risen into the thousands. While the U.S. government and media was telling one story, an intrepid group of filmmakers were braving roadblocks and bullets to bring the world the truth. This film documents what really happened. Mass graves, homeless families, plus interviews with some of the principles involved help to reveal the hidden agenda behind the invasion. This film won the Academy Award for best documentary film in 1993. Free. Discussion to follow. Sponsor: Latin America Forum Contact voiceofpoor@yahoo.com http://www.Latinamericaforum.org

"Fidel: The Untold Story" 7 pm Oak Bend Branch Library, 842 South Holmes Ave. Library is located near the intersection of Hwy 44 and Big Bend behind the QT gas station (Holmes Ave.) Latin American Forum: Fidel Castro is one of the most influential and controversial figures who has ever lived. This film takes a unique and and fascinating look at a man few in America understand outside an olive green uniform, fiery speeches, and Cuban cigars. This film offers a rare opportunity to see the man through personal interviews with Castro himself, historians, public figures and close friends, including world leaders like Nelson Mandela, businessman Ted Turner, and ex-world champ Muhammad Ali, with footage from the Cuban state archives. Viewed as a ruthless dictator by some, and one of the world's foremost humanitarians by others, the leader of this poor Caribbean island provides more doctors the the World Health Organization than any other nation. This film cuts through a wall of propaganda that has lasted for 50 years to offer a fresh look at an old "nemesis". Free. Discussion to follow.
